Kay K-23 Jumbo Acoustic Guitar 1950s w/ Lifton Hardshell Case - Natural - Fair Condition
This guitar is presented by Izzy's Vintage Guitars of Huntsville, AL
Up for sale is this vintage 1950's Kay K-23 jumbo acoustic guitar. These vintage Kay jumbo acoustics are extremely uncommon and very sought-after. This one, while it could use a little love, is a great playing example as it sits and is a ton of fun to play.
Cosmetically, the instrument shows fairly heavy wear. There is a spot on the lower bout where the finish has been rubbed through and it looks like a crack repair but we can't find the crack as it must have been very tight. Nothing is open and the top is structurally sound. This can be seen in the photos. The sides show wear and some finish flaking and there are numerous dings, scuffs, and scratches that one would expect on a seventy year old instrument. It is original with the exception of an added strap button on the heel and the slightly more modern double-line Kluson tuners (no extra holes).
This guitar plays and sounds great as it sits, but it will need some attention sooner or later. The original string-through bridge has worn through to the saddle (pictured) and will need to be replaced eventually. There is some top and back separation along the sides in a few spots that will need to be lined up and glued back together as well (pictured). Other than that, the guitar is sound. For these reasons, this guitar is listed as "fair" although it's probably much closer to the "good" category, but we like to be very transparent.
The instrument plays well with comfortable action all the way up the neck, which is straight. The original frets are well worn, but still have a decent amount of life left in them. To add to it, it's a good sounding instrument as well and a great front man guitar (if a similar model was good enough for Gene Vincent, well...).
Included is a very cool period Lifton hardshell case, complete with the original case badge inside. While the case does show heavy wear from years of use, all of the latches and hinges are present and functional. The covering is missing from the handle, but the handle is still intact. We could sell the case separately for big bucks, but it's obvious that it's housed this guitar for a long time and it really adds to the whole package, so we've got to keep them together. It will be well-packed inside the case to ensure safe shipping.
Although not perfect, this guitar is a good playing example of a rare model and, while it's eventually going to need a little love, it's a prime candidate for the work to be done to. These are bringing close to $2,000 these days after they've been gone over so don't miss out on this deal...
