Up for sale is this vintage 1929 Gibson L-4 acoustic archtop guitar. This is an insanely cool instrument. Marked "L-4 Spec" on the original label, this is the only round soundhole L-4 that we have ever seen with a factory black top!

This instrument is in nice condition for its age and is all original with the exception of two of the mounting screws holding the original patent pending Grover tuners on and the nut for the pickguard bracket. Even the original celluloid pickguard is intact, although a bit shrunken, which is nearly unheard of on these! The original bridge still carries the chalk serial number underneath the base, which is very cool to see.

The guitar has had a top crack at one point which was repaired and cleated inside (pictured). It's stable and the top is as it should be with no sinking or any funny business like that. The original black finish shows typical checking, dings, scratches, and scuffs that you would expect on an instrument catching up on one hundred years. The finish on the back and sides is original as well and shows the same wear. There is some beautiful figure on the back and it's as much a joy to look at as it is to play.

This one plays great with comfortable, low action all the way up the neck. The neck angle on these instruments was low from the factory, which means that the adjustable bridge is all the way down but the guitar plays exactly as it should. These didn't have a wide range of adjustment, so it's perfectly normal. The original frets show wear, but still have life left in them. That being said, this is an OLD Gibson and they have their quirks as far as fret buzz and the such. There is no fretting out or anything like that. The truss rod functions exactly as it should and the neck is straight.

The original redline Geib hardshell case is included. The case shows heavy wear and a lot of pitting to the hardware. There is some separation near the end (pictured) and the locking latch is busted (pictured). Overall, though, the case is sturdy and intact which is cool to see!

This one has been hanging out with me personally and I've been tempted to add it to my personal collection of pre-1930 Gibson instruments, but I just have too much stuff so my stupidity is your gain. You may never see another black round-hole L-4, so don't miss this chance...
